Description

First issued in 1995 and now in its third round, the long-running Australian Lunar Coin Series celebrates the animals of the ancient Chinese lunar zodiac with a sequence of annual designs portraying the mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Fourth in line after the mouse, ox and tiger. Bestowed with instinctive bravery, persistence, and intelligence, those born in years 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024 are said to be ambitious, charismatic, and natural leaders.

The coin design captures the awe-inspiring splendour of the Chinese dragon. The artistry includes references to the dragon’s control of the elements in the form of motifs representing waves and fog. Also incorporated in the design is the Chinese character for ‘dragon’, the inscription ‘DRAGON 2024’, and a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary in 2024.
