Description

The 1 oz Maple Leaf coin is the Canadian symbolic gold coin. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, the coin has the same designer as the Krugerrand and was introduced in 1979 specs to compete with the Krugerrand on the emerging world bullion market.

It is considered one of the purest gold coins available today. Since 1982, the Canadian Mint has purchased the millesimal fineness of these innovative gold coins at .9999.

The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse is adorned with a magical depiction of the maple leaf.

As of 2013, a small safety detail of the laser engraved maple leaf has been added under the larger motif on the reverse of the coin. A background of light refraction lines was introduced in 2015 on both sides to further combat the risk of counterfeiting.

Like other coins of the same type, the Gold Maple Leaf does not change the design characteristics from year to year.
