Description

The name of the coin VARIETAD LINGUISTICA is in homage to Article 70, paragraph 5, of the Federal Constitution which states: "The Confederation supports the measures of the Cantons of Grisons and Ticino aimed at preserving and promoting the Romansh and Italian languages".

The four speech bubbles contain quotes from Article 70 of the Federal Constitution. For German it is paragraph 3 which lays the foundations for the promotion of multilingualism, for French it is paragraph 4 which ensures the Confederation's support for multilingual cantons and for Italian and Romansh it is paragraph 5 which guarantees the Confederation's support to the Cantons of Grisons and Ticino in the conservation and promotion of the Romansh and Italian languages.

The obverse of the coin is completed with the denomination CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA, the year of issue 2023 and the value FR 25 on the outside of the clockwise edge. According to figures provided by the Federal Council, 62.1% of the Swiss population speaks German (or Swiss German), 22.8% French, 8% Italian and 0.5% retain Romansh as their main language.
