Description
Charles Nicolas Fabvier (1782 – 1855) was a French ambassador, general and member of parliament. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815 he continued to serve loyally in the French Royal Army. In 1817 he helped Marshal Marmont to quell the riots in Lyon, provoked by the harsh behavior of the local military governor, General Simon Canuel. Shortly thereafter he was suspended from active service due to his belief in liberal ideals, and was arrested in August 1820 and accused of participating in a military conspiracy. Although he was released due to lack of evidence he was later recalled as a witness, but refused to reveal a name requested by the public prosecutor, and so had to pay a fine of 500 francs. In 1822 he was commissioned to help the journey of four sergeants to La Rochelle, but the task was revoked. In 1823 he decided to leave France and move to Greece to support the war of independence. His first task was to supervise the fortifications of Navarino. He then moved to Brittany to gather support from the Philhellenics. Returning to Greece, he was placed at the head of a small regular Greek army with which he participated in numerous battles, the most famous of which was the siege of the Acropolis of Athens in 1826. In 1828 he returned to France, before returning to Greece with the Morea expedition organized by the French.
